This course is designed to provide a fundamental knowledge of chemical structure, physical properties, mechanical properties, degradation and processing of biomaterials. The surface properties of biomaterials is discussed and relate to protein interactions, cell interactions and medical implants. The effects of biocompatibility which is wound healing, immune response, thrombosis, infection, tumorigenesis and calcification is also discussed.
