This course provides the students for the understanding of the nervous system through an integrated series of student-centred team-based learning, lectures, practical, problem-based learning and clinical skills training. Students will learn the gross structure and the interconnections between the various parts of the nervous system. A series of practical will be conducted to reinforce the students’ understanding of the structure of the nervous system. The structure is correlated with functional aspects and also clinical conditions. A basic understanding of the developmental aspects of the nervous system is also expected with emphasis on common congenital abnormalities. Further information on chemical mediators in the various parts of the nervous system, major clinical disorders and the drugs available for the treatment of various disorders will be discussed. Students will acquire knowledge on the mechanisms of drug actions as well as their adverse and pharmacokinetic effects. Common pathological conditions and common infections affecting the nervous system will also be highlighted. Problem-based learning and clinical skills training sessions are conducted to facilitate the students in understanding the nervous system in an integrative manner.
